When a sniper’s bullet struck Pfc. Colton Rusk, the first to reach his body was his best friend Eli – a bomb-sniffing, black Labrador so loyal he snapped at other Marines who rushed to his fallen handler.

The two were inseparable. Military dogs are supposed to sleep in kennels when deployed, but Rusk broke the rules and let Eli curl up with him on his cot. Other times, the dog took up the entire sleeping bag. Rusk ate ready-to-eat meals, so that’s what Eli ate instead of dog food, Darrell Rusk said.

“Whatever is mine is his,” Colton Rusk wrote on his Facebook page.

After Rusk died Dec. 6, his parents decided they wanted to adopt his dog. They picked Eli up Thursday at Lackland Air Force to take him back to their home in rural South Texas. It was only the second time that a U.S. military dog has been adopted by the family of a handler killed in combat.

Never forget his sacrifice.

Today is that day, where we remember our fallen. Those who have gone and suffered, that we may live. Who bore the burden of carrying this nation upon their shoulders, that we may stand tall. Those who gave all, so we could be free.

“We walked among the crosses
Where our fallen soldiers lay.
And listened to the bugle
As taps began to play.

The Chaplin led a prayer
We stood with heads bowed low.
And I thought of fallen comrades
I had known so long ago.

They came from every city
Across this fertile land.
That we might live in freedom.
They lie here ‘neath the sand.

I felt a little guilty
My sacrifice was small.
I only lost a little time
But these men lost their all.

Now the services are over
For this Memorial Day.
To the names upon these crosses
I just want to say,

Thanks for what you’ve given
No one could ask for more.
May you rest with God in heaven
From now through evermore.”

I will persist without exception.

I will persist until I succeed.

In Spain, young bulls are tested for the fight arena in a certain manner. Each is brought to the ring and allowed to attack a picador who pricks them with a lance. The bravery of each bull is then rated with care according to the number of times he demonstrates his willingness to charge in spite of the sting of the blade. Henceforth will I recognize that each day I am tested by life in like manner. If I persist, if I continue to try, if I continue to charge forward, I will succeed.

I will persist until I succeed.

I was not delivered unto this world in defeat, nor does failure course in my veins. I am not a sheep waiting to be prodded by my shepherd. I am a lion and I refuse to talk, to walk, to sleep with the sheep. I will hear not those who weep and complain, for their disease is contagious. Let them join the sheep. The slaughterhouse of failure is not my destiny.

I will persist until I succeed.

The prizes of life are at the end of each journey, not near the beginning; and it is not given to me to know how many steps are necessary in order to reach my goal. Failure I may still encounter at the thousandth step, yet success hides behind the next bend in the road. Never will I know how close it lies unless I turn the corner.

Always will I take another step. If that is of no avail I will take another, and yet another. In truth, one step at a time is not too difficult.

I will persist until I succeed.

Henceforth, I will consider each day’s effort as but one blow of my blade against a mighty oak. The first blow may cause not a tremor in the wood, nor the second, nor the third. Each blow, of itself, may be trifling and seem of no consequence. Yet from childish swipes the oak will eventually tumble. So it will be with my efforts of today.

I will be liken to the rain drop which washes away the mountain; the ant who devours a tiger; the star which brightens the earth; the slave who builds a pyramid. I will build my castle one brick at a time for I know that small attempts, repeated, will complete any undertaking.

I will persist until I succeed.

I will never consider defeat and I will remove from my vocabulary such words and phrases as quit, cannot, unable, impossible, out of the question, improbable, failure, unworkable, hopeless and retreat; for they are the words of fools. I will avoid despair but if this disease of the mind should infect me then I will work on in despair. I will toil and I will endure. I will ignore the obstacles at my feet and keep mine eyes on the goals above my head, for I know that where dry desert ends, green grass grows.

I will persist until I succeed.

I will remember the ancient law of averages and I will bend it to my good. I will persist with knowledge that each failure to sell will increase my chance for success at the next attempt. Each nay I hear will bring me closer to the sound of yea. Each frown I meet only prepares me for the smile to come. Each misfortune I encounter will carry in it the seed of tomorrow’s good luck. I must have the night to appreciate the day. I must fail often to succeed only once.

I will persist until I succeed.

I will try, and try, and try again. Each obstacle I will consider as a mere detour to my goal and a challenge to my profession. I will persist and develop my skills as the mariner develops his, by learning to ride out the wrath of each storm.

I will persist until I succeed.

Henceforth, I will learn and apply another secret of those who excel in my work. When each day is ended, not regarding whether it has been a success or failure, I will attempt to achieve one more sale. When my thoughts beckon my tired body homeward I will resist the temptation to depart. I will try again. I will make one more attempt to close with victory, and if that fails I will make another. Never will I allow any day to end in failure. Thus will I plant the seed of tomorrow’s success and gain an insurmountable advantage over those who cease their labor at a prescribed time. When others cease their struggle, then mine will begin, and my harvest will be full.

I will persist until I succeed.

Nor will I allow yesterday’s success to lull me into today’s complacency, for this is the great foundation of failure. I will forget the happenings of the day that is gone, whether they were good or bad, and greet the new sun with confidence that this will be the best day of my life.

So long as there is breath in me, that long will I persist. For now I know one of the greatest principles of success; if I persist long enough I will win.

I will persist.

I will win.

Long day…

It’s been a long day, didn’t sleep well last night, got up early this morning and didn’t do as much as I hoped to do. But that’s just a complaint. That’s just the part of me that does its best to keep me down, keep me from being my best. Keep my from being one-hundred percent. So I choose to stand up, regardless of where I am or the circumstances surrounding me, and do my best. I will NOT quit.

Time to change who I am.

We Won’t Back Down.

I had the privilege to struggle for 7 hours on what is, the hardest hike I’ve ever done. I’ve conquered this hike on multiple occasion, but none have tested me mentally as hard as this time did. My team and I climb four-thousand feet in elevation in less than seven-miles. Completely up hill. Most had packs over 20 pounds, few had packs over 35. Regardless of your pack weight, it was a near impossible achievement to earn. Yet, we all did it. We all pushed ourselves past our mental capacity and into our hearts. It was the strength of each other that we all made it up. For that, I am proud to say, we are a team. Hooyah.

“Strength through adversity. The strongest steel is forged by the fires of hell. It is pounded and struck repeatedly before it’s plunged back into the molten fire. The fire gives it power and flexibility, and the blows give it strength. Those two things make the metal pliable and able to withstand every battle it’s called upon to fight.”

I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, i’m telling you it’s going to be worth it.

Courage

For no man ever proves himself a good man in war

Unless he can endure to face the blood and the slaughter,

Go close against the enemy and fight with his hands.

Here is courage, mankind’s finest possession, here is

The noblest prize that a young man can endeavor to win,

And it is a good thing his city and all the people share with him

When a man plants his feet and stands in the foremost spears

Relentlessly, all thought of foul flight completely forgotten,

And has well trained his heart to be steadfast and to endure,

And with words encourages the man who is stationed beside him.

Here is a man who proves he to be valiant in war.

With a sudden rush he turns to flight the rugged battalions

Of the enemy, and sustains the beating waves of assault.

And he who so falls among the champions and loses his sweet life,

So blessing with honor his city, his father, and all his people,

With wounds in his chest, where the spear that he was facing has transfixed

That massive guard of his shield, and gone through his breastplate as well,

Why, such a man is lamented alike by the young and the elders,

And all his city goes into mourning and grieves for his loss.

His tomb is pointed to with pride, and so are his children,

And his children’s children, and afterward all the race that is his.

His shining glory is never forgotten, his name is remembered,

And he becomes an immortal, though he lies under the ground,

When one who was a brave man has been killed by the furious War God

Standing his ground and fighting hard for his children and land.

But if he escapes the doom of death, the destroyer of bodies,

And wins his battle, and bright renown for the work of his spear,

All men give place to him like, the youth and the elders,

And much joy comes his way before he goes down to the dead.

Aging, he has reputation among his citizens. No one

Tries to interfere with his honors or all he deserves;

All men withdraw before his presence, and yield their seats to him,

The youth, and the men his age, and even those older than he.

Thus a man should endeavor to reach this high place of courage

With all his heart, and, so trying, never be backward in war.

 -Tyrtaeus, the Spartan poet.

Keep going and never mind the fear you feel. It’ll hurt, but it’ll be worth it.

Just keep going…

We push through the pain and strive for a level of excellence no one can reach, but for what purpose? Why do we try? What is the point?

As a follower of the path of the Spartans of old, I believe it to be success. An ultimate love for what is unknown. A love for the onslaught of sorrow, fear and pain. In the end, its about moving forward.

Find your goal and find what fills you with pride and joy, when you have found it,

Run full speed till you get there, because its that goal that makes the pain worth it.

I am an American. I am as free today as I was yesterday, because of the brave men and women who fought, bled and died for the American way of freedom. Those brave individuals, tasked with carrying the United States upon there shoulder have not, and will not let us down. There valor and integrity on and off the battle field has proven it. Remember, remember, remember what they’ve done. For the very hour we forget, we forget and lose our freedom. Until one brave soul is willing to sacrifice enough to show us: freedom is found through strength, integrity, valor, courage, virtue and a commitment to never quit.

Never forget.
